The Magic of Wool: Warmth, Style, and Sustainability for Winter
Winter often feels like the season we must weather. Especially here on the Yorkshire coast, where winter winds from the sea can whip at your skin, the footfall fades in our tourist towns and snowy roads over the North York Moors dictate where and when you can travel. Winter’s short days and dark nights do, however, provide a chance to enjoy cosy evenings at home: each night a small act of hibernation from the cold outside. When else could we truly appreciate candlelight, the warming comfort of a hot drink or a sofa snuggle underneath a cosy blanket? For me, a wool throw, is a winter essential. There’s something about a woven blanket draped over the arm of chair or sofa which makes it irresistibly inviting.
Why Wool?
It’s a Natural Fibre
As long as there’s grass to graze, sheep will produce a fresh fleece every year, which means wool is a circular, renewable material. It’s also hypoallergenic, resistant to dust mites and naturally resists odours.
Wool Lasts a Lifetime
With proper care a wool blanket can last for decades. Wool is an exceptionally durable material, which will resist wear and tear much better than synthetic alternatives.
It Helps Regulate Body Temperature
Wool is nature’s original insulator. Its fibres form tiny pockets of air, allowing the material to absorb and release moisture, which makes it extremely breathable. This helps keep you warm in the Winter and cool in the Summer.
It’s Bio-Degradable
Wool will never leave an impact on earth as it’s an entirely biodegradable product, unlike synthetic materials which contribute to microplastics pollution.
Tweedmill Textiles: Timeless Style & Tradition
A British-made wool blanket isn’t just a practical piece for cold nights; it’s a piece of heritage. Our supplier, Tweedmill Textiles, are a family-run business and have been weaving since 1971. They use traditional weaving methods which have been passed through generations, creating throws with timeless patterns and designs. By choosing a wool throw, you’re helping to keep these centuries old skills alive.

It sounds like wool can do no wrong. Here’s the disclaimer; some people don’t like the texture. High-quality wool should feel soft and comforting with a slight texture but it’s not for everyone. Wool throws are also not cheap. Our range of large blanket throws start from £72 and our extra large from £95. If you do decide to buy you can feel good about embracing quality, tradition, and sustainability whilst cherishing something that will last in your home for very long time.
